I am going to try and add the photos that my Dad took at Roberto's first cast change....the only problem is that my Dad did not realize that it was on video on his camera so I am not sure how they will load. First I will update what all happened to end with such a badly broken leg/ankle.
Roberto was staining a home only 3 blocks from the hospital in Jackson. I had the day off and had numerous items that NEEDED to get done. At 9:05 I got his call informing me that he broke his leg. I called a friend of mine that I was suppost to meet in Rexburg and let her know that I would actually be heading in the opposite direction. I then got Gavry in the car and thought about Little Roberto and what I should do with him since he would be riding the bus home from school. I stopped at our wonderful neighbors house who graciously said that he could go to their house until we could make it home or set up other plans.
Unfortunately, when Roberto called I could not hear him all that well so, I tried to call his boss to find out what happened but he did not answer his phone. I then called my Mom and Dad. I only had them for a couple minutes though before I lost service on my phone. As I came into Wilson I tried Roberto's boss again.. this time he answered and had no idea what was going on but told me he would meet us at the emergency room.
When I saw his foot the first time I knew it was broke. He had a lot of swelling, not to mention, his foot was not on his leg right! After x-rays, Dr. Jost (an orthopedic doctor) came in to see us. She is WONDERFUL!! She informed us that he had a double fracture and dislocation. At first she said it would be a couple of surgeries with the first one being that night and that she was going to try and relocate a portion of the foot there in the E.R. to try and help with swelling. Roberto had lots of pain from them trying to relocate it.
We then got to go to a regular hospital room to wait for the surgery time. I had lots of phone calls from concerned family and friends trying to see what they could do to help out. Also in the mix, Roberto missed the school bus, so he ended up being walked across the street to his daycare. Gavry was his usual active self and quite the handful. I had offers from friends to come and get him which I probably should have taken....but I was afraid of his reaction.
Due to the great amount of pain they came in a couple hours before his surgery and numbed his leg which was a welcome relief! At 4:00 they came at took him to surgery which gave me a chance to come home at get things situated.
Luckily, my brother-in-law, Esteban was still in Victor and offered to come stay the weekend with the boys. What a relief to know that they would be able to be home and I would not have to worry about arrangements with other families.
I got back to Jackson about 8:00pm just as they were rolling him back from surgery. The end result was 12 screws and a plate! Roberto now jokes that he has a hardware store, one thing I admire about him.. He never lost his sense of humor even in pain! He may need future surgeries on the ankle and will definately need a scope in a year or so to take out the debree. We were in the hospital for 5 days!
So, how the accident happened..... the ground had been soft from some recent rain and snow fall and has he climbed his ladder almost to where he need to be he felt the ladder starting to sink/fall on one side. His reaction was to grab the roof, which due to the frost on the roof was unable to hold on. He fell and on his way down hit a beam that sticks out under one of the windows about 10 inches, broke the ladder with his arm, and hit the ground. His co-worker said that when he got to him the bottom of his foot was pointed straight back up at his body.
We are grateful that it was not worse and that he did not break his arm, only the ladder! He is now off of work for 12 weeks with all of it being non-weight bearing. His release date to go back to work at the moment is January 12, 2009! He at the moment is only able to get up to use the bathroom and eat otherwise it has to be above his heart! This has been quite the challenge for him since he is so active.
My Mom and Dad made it down on Monday the 20 to help out, the day before he was released. My Dad left on Tuesday the 28th and my Mom will be here for a couple weeks to help out since he is unable to do much. We are grateful for their help and the help of my ward. They have brought in meals, helped us arrange furniture, visited us in the hospital, and at home, and just be an ear to listen. I feel VERY blessed to know such wonderful people!
